Tutu Sexy

Last February Malaysian authorities banned the concert of American singer Erykah Badu after some photographs of her body art, including the Arabic word for Allah, were published in a local newspaper. This  April a ballet show by the Singapore Dance Theatre was also denied a visa, said to be because of the “revealing” outfits that were to be worn by the performers for The Nutcracker – in this case short tutus and tights . Just how pernicious is censorship in Malaysia, and what does this mean for Malaysian contemporary art? Art Radar Asia  recounts some of the censorship issues which has risen in the last several years.
